Octopus, cuttlefish and squid are well known in the invertebrate world. With their ink-squirting decoy technique, ability to change colour, bizarre body plan and remarkable intelligence they highlight that lacking a back-bone doesn't always mean lacking sophistication. Just because these sea creatures lack some abilities does not mean they are lacking intelligence. Scientists are examining their deep evolutionary past, researchers have been spoiled by their generous fossil record. The researchers used a technique called molecular clocks to investigate the timing of when the groups split from each other. Molecular palaeontologists are transforming our understanding of how life became so complex and diverse.

Since squid and octopuses have no backbone what makes them still sophisticated creatures is that they can compress their bodies and dodge their predators by leaving a spray of ink. This makes them unique because even with the lack of a backbone they can still defend themselves. In the prehistoric times the dinosaurs ruled the land but squids octopuses and fish where at the top in the water.

With their ink-squirting decoy technique, ability to change colour, bizarre body plan and remarkable intelligence they highlight that lacking a back-bone doesn't always mean lacking sophistication. The use of the word sophistication means that they do lack some major elements most animals have but they evolved like most species into the best adapted animal for their environment. I learned that the animal traps pray by using their bodies like a tent. Also when the animal is scared it compresses and a black cloud of ink is emerged and when the predator can see that animal is far gone. Finally I learned these creatures were in the sea up to 160million years ago.

By sophistication they mean that the cephalopods are known to have been caught up in a major transition, evolving to lose the shells of their ancestors and develop as dynamic and uniquely adapted marine animals. And I learned that octopuses and squid appear during the Mesozoic Marine Revolution, the modern squids and octopuses could compress their body and more efficiently jet away leaving a baffling cloud of ink with the attacking predator. Before the predator realises what has happened and gains clear view again, the squid is far out of sight, and Through synoptic view, so called molecular palaeontologists are transforming our understanding of how life became so complex and diverse.

In the article what they mean by sophistication, its within the kingdom of octopuses like the squid which have no back bone which makes them squeeze through tight spaces. They have flexible bodies all while constantly adjusting its coloration through specialized organs on its skin. An octopus can change its color as we say (camouflage) to either catch pay or hide from it. The creature also appears to be rather smart, they can use its body to an advantage by trapping pray in a tent-like structure to trap it inside which is neat!

They mean that some species can be hard to understand. Three interesting facts from the article are that octopuses and squids first evolved during the Mesozoic era, cephalopods lost their shells during evolution, and molecular clocks were used by scientists to discover when the groups split.

The author uses the word "sophistication" to describe the complexity of the cephalopods and their past. Cephalopods used to have shells, but have lost their shells throughout each generation. Octopuses and squid first appeared during the mesozoic marine revolution. The ink that squids use are actually a defense mechanism.

In the article, sophistication refers to the skills they have evolved like squirting ink, changing color and having high intelligence. These creatures were in the sea up to 160 million years ago, they lost their shells during evolution and they can compress their body due to a reduced internal skeleton allowing them to escape predators using a cloud of ink.

Sophistication means that it describes cephalopods and their evolution and how they formed. They mean that many people might not know and understand about the species. Three interesting facts about the article is that cephalopods are evolving to lose the shells of their ancestors and develops as dynamic and uniquely adapted marine animals. Secondly, through the synoptic view, molecular palaeontologists are transforming of how life is complex. Finally, Complex Bayesian models take all sorts of information into account to build a tree of evolutionary time.

Sophistication means that they were formed differently and they have many different things that are specially adapted to them that help them survive. For example many different species have different adaptions that help them survive or live longer. For example octopus, cuttlefish and squid have an ink squirting ability and ability to change colors which helps them survive and be harder to pray on.

The passage meant by using sophistication, it's has to be revolved around the kingdom of octopuses. The squids do not have a back, which helps them squeeze in tiny spaces and able to hide and get food easily. Therefore octopus can change the color of themselves and that's called camouflage, which help them hide from being eaten or attacked. With their flexible bodies they trap their bodies around the reef and catch their food.

These animals are seen as sophisticated because they evolved out of their shells and into animals that lack back bone but have intelligence beyond most other species. They evolved during the time of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, and during this time, ecologies under the sea were changing rapidly. Some interesting facts from this article include the fact that octopuses and squid appear during the Mesozoic Marine Revolution. Also, cephalopods are now known to have also been caught up in this major transition, evolving to lose the shells of their ancestors and develop as dynamic and uniquely adapted marine animals. Finally, modern squids and octopuses can compress their bodies to more efficiently jet away leaving a cloud of ink to distract and disorient their predator.

That not having a back-bone is not uncommon in that organism. But, the mostly shell-less modern cephalopods have been less easy to understand. Fish, squid and their predators were locked in evolutionary 'arms-races', leading to increasingly speedy and agile predators and prey. Octopus have the ability to change colors. They lack a back-bone. The modern squids and octopuses could compress their body and more efficiently jet away.

Octopus, cuttlefish and squid do not posses backbones which may lead most to think that their structure is simple or lacking in sophistication. Sophistication can be exhibited in various other ways besides structure fore example, during the mesozoic revolution cepholops diversified into the common octopuses, cuttlefish, and squid. Cephalopods were involved in a major transition resulting in the loss of the shells of their ancestors and developing as modern dynamic an adapted marine animals. Modern squids and octopuses can compress their bodies and sneak away from predators faster while leaving a cloud of ink with their attacker. Finally scientists have the ability to estimate evolutionary time based on mutations of species over millions of years.

What they mean by sophistication is that they are the king of octopus and squid some interesting things that I learned was that they can strech ther body around objects to trap there prey, they can fit in to any space possible and they dont have a single bone in there entire body

When they talk about their sophistication they mean that this animal still has traits that are well adapted to its environment. three facts about cephalopods are they are adapting to lose their shell, scientists know when these animals have adapted to new environments, lastly squid and octopuses can escape from predators by fitting in tiny holes and using ink.

The octopus, cuttlefish, and squid all do not need a backbone because all different types of features.Sophistication means that how the cephalopods formed and the ways of them.It seems that cephalopods adapted into the octopus during times of new change. Also they could figure out from the creatures fossils if they could be the same in history. One fact is that using molecular clocks could show the times of when both of the groups split up from each other. Also cephalopods adapted strongly after losing many of their ancestors culture.Lastly, octopus and squids can put themselves into any space from them not having backbones.

What it means by not lacking sophistication of these Cephalopoda, is that just because they do not have bones does not mean that they are not smart and are not capable of existing and defending themselves in their environment. These sea creatures have traits that other creatures do not have. They can compress their bodies and quickly get out of deadly situations. They release ink, have very flexible and convenient bodies as well as change color to their environment to act as a camofloug. Three qualities I found interesting are just how they have evolved to boneless creatures. the use of molecular clocks used by researchers and scientists. Also, how quickly ecology was changing underneath the seas.

these creatures are remarkable because they can escape pray in many ways. one way is that they can squeeze through tiny holes. the other way that they can escape is if they change their colors to camouflage. the last way that they can escape is if they squirt out water it pushes them away fast the way that they can do all of this is because they don't have a backbone

sophitication means talks about the complexity of there traits . the octopus has the trait to change color also they don 't have a back bone so that means they can squeeze into tight spaces.the squids traits are it can squirt ink when threaten by a possible predator the squid also doesn't have a backbone.squid also have a jet proplosion trick to get away from there enemys.

Sophistication is when animals like squid and octopuses don't have h hard outside shell or any back bones in them. They don't have bones or hard outside shells so they could squeeze into tight spaces. it took millions of years for these animals to develop like this. They know that these fossils are related because scientist compare them to find similarities.

Sophistication means they adapted to their surroundings and their ways of living more different than other animals have. They do not have any bones which makes them easily maneuverable through different structures and Scientists compare these findings to others and relate them together.

squid and octopus have no backbone, these creatures have a odd way protecting themselves which is spraying ink and their enemy. its pretty cool though how their able to protect themselves with no backbone.
